On intransitive nasal prefixation in Sino-Tibetan languages

The author discusses alternations of voiced and voiceless stop initials in intransitive/transitive pairs in Tibeto-Burman languages in the light of Chinese facts. He suggests that it is not necessary to suppose two distinct processes in proto-Tibeto-Burman to account for the facts, as Benedict's “alternation of root initial”, assigned by him to the Proto-Tibeto-Burman level, is probably only a special case of voicing under the effect of an intransitive nasal prefix.
L'auteur examine les alternances de voisement à l'initiale des paires transitif/intransitif en tibéto-birman à la lumière de faits chinois, et suggère qu'il n'est pas nécessaire de supposer deux processus distincts pour rendre compte des faits : en effet, “l'alternance de voisement” reconstruite par Benedict au niveau proto-Tibeto-Birman, n'est probablement qu'un cas particulier du voisement sous l'effet d'un préfixe nasal.
